New songs

It's been a long time since this column is even updated. So don't come here. You'd be better off checking the places where I find my music anyway, namely;

NME - new musical express
http://www.nme.com
this british-based music magazine is as old as the beatles and features lots of news, reviews, youtube links, and everything about music. it has a particular brit-centric slant to it but that's the type of music i like so if u like britpop go for it.

http://www.drownedinsound.com
also another music site.

and also
http://www.pitchfork.com

or
http://www.metacritic.com - here is for a consolidated list of reviews of any particular album.

i also like: http://www.dotmusic.com - Very UK centerd

for american rock check out
http://www.rollingstone.com
for the rollingstone magazine website.

and for the most extensive music database of all, check out:
http://www.allmusic.com (Allmusic) - it has song reviews, album reviews, etc, of almost anything. very extensive.

And now, for some of my favourite songs that I've been listening to recently:

Top 10 - in no particular order:

1. MGMT - Kids
NME named it the top track of 2008. i'm not so sure i'd go so far to give it that label, but it really is a killer whopper of a song. it's based on a recognisable electronic keyboard riff that sounds vaguely chinese / pentatonic, and there are lots of cool synth sounds and beats and rhythms and pads in it - while the vocals sing over the riff ;"you were a child, crawling on your knees"....before the anthemic chorus warns us to "control yourself, take only what you need from it". apparently from songmeanings.net it's about not engaging in pure unprotected sex which leads to unwanted babies, as these people also have feelings and get hurt and that the consequence of your actions is "a family of trees wanting to be haunted" haunted family trees and alot of pain, hurt, etc. mm. oh it has a nice keyboard riff later to boot, and is only 4 chords.

2. TV on the Radio - Wolf Like Me
okay, not particularly a new song, but because i've been lisetning to alot of Tv on the radio i guess this would have to come in here. very very catchy and almost primitive in the pounding of its incessant beats, with alot of driven distorted guitars and a bit of synth - moreover the notes are really blues notes so some pple may wodner how atonal it is, but it fits the effect perfectly. is the kinda song that will make you jjust want to get up and dance and move along to - and pound your head to. headbanger. brilliant.

3. TV on the radio - family tree
a more contemplative, emotional song, this one is really a thing of beauty, absolutely sublime and touching, not to mention artistically beautiful. carried along by just mainly piano, electric keys, and strings, it tells the tale of how 2 people cannot be together due to family differences, and it has a really lovely lilting melody - very melodious in quality - sang by tumbe akinpenke which really gives it that gospel quality. nice. go listen.

4. the cribs - mens' needs; definitive pop song.

5. neutral milk hotel - in the aeroplane over the sea
an old song, but delicious. acoustic guitars strum a 12/8 beat and the song is so melodious and distinctive.

6. MGMT - time to pretend

7. TV on the radio - golden age

8. Animal collective - my girls
a really werid song but gets beter ever time u listen to it.

9. Bon Iver - Flume
a thing of beauty. surreal and ethereal vocals with sublime clear guitars that make you cry with every chord strum, or every sigh. check out his falsetto, it's iwcked.

10. Bon Iver - Skinny love
nice as well
